Improve Pulp Uniformity with Refiner Plate Optimization

The Effect of Refiner Plate in Improving Pulp Uniformity

Pulp uniformity is a key indicator affecting paper quality and production stability, and it is also a challenge faced by the papermaking industry. During pulp refining, the performance and wear condition of the refiner plate directly determine fiber dispersion efficiency and refining consistency. Inadequate paper uniformity is a common paper defect, which not only damages the physical strength and optical properties of the paper, but also affects the running intensity and speed of the wet paper web in the papermaking process, and even leads to uneven ink absorption and paper damage during printing, seriously impacting the papermaking and printing processes. The key to solving this problem lies in optimizing the refiner plate.

In modern papermaking systems, pulp uniformity is influenced by various factors such as pulp ratio, wet weight of fibers, pulp distribution technology in the headbox, weir plate structure design, control of approach flow, uniformity of wire dewatering, adjustment of pulp wire speed ratio. However, many mills overlook the critical influence of refiner plate wear, especially serrated or uneven wear patterns, which can significantly reduce pulp uniformity.

The Effect of Beating on Paper Uniformity

Beating is a key process in papermaking, which directly affects the uniformity of fibers and determines the distribution uniformity of fibers in the paper. This distribution uniformity is ultimately reflected in core indicators such as paper uniformity, smoothness, and strength. The refining efficiency of the disc refiner plate determines fiber consistency. Well-designed refiner plates ensure stable fiber dispersion, resulting in improved paper smoothness, strength, and formation quality.

Causes of Uneven Refiner Plate Wear

Uneven wear in the grinding area of a double disc pulping machine is a prominent problem, usually manifested as side refining or eccentric refining, which seriously affects the uniformity of the pulp after tapping and the stability of the equipment. Uneven refiner plate teeth and wear can lead to a decrease in pulp uniformity and equipment stability issues.

Material of Disc Refiner Plate

The material of the disc refiner plate is related to its service life, energy consumption, and operational stability:

  • White alloy cast iron: Low cost, suitable for low concentration conventional beating, but poor wear resistance.
  • Multi element alloy: It has high wear resistance and impact toughness, suitable for high concentration and high load conditions, and extends the replacement cycle.
  • Stainless steel and bimetallic composite materials: corrosion-resistant and impact resistant, suitable for waste paper pulp or high concentration slurry systems with high impurities, reducing the risk of non-uniform wear.

Pay attention to regularly checking the wear of the refiner plate to avoid uneven beating caused by broken teeth or wavy wear.
