Pressure Screen Basket for Pulp Screening

Pressure screen basket is commonly used in pulp and paper systems for screening fine pulp and before the paper machine. As a core screening component installed inside the pressure screen, they play a crucial role in fiber separation and pulp screening. In the pulping process, when the pulp flows into the pressure screen, the screen basket works in conjunction with the rotor. When the rotor is running, the rotor blades move along the surface of the screen basket, and the pressure difference near the head of the rotor blades increases. As the tail of the rotor blades and the gap gradually increase, a local negative pressure appears in the area. If the negative pressure continues to increase, the good pulp outside the pressure screen basket will return to the inside, backflushing the pulp and coarse fibers adhering to the pressure screen basket, and separating qualified fibers from other impurities such as plastics and wood chips.

Inflow Slotted Screen Basket

Unlike outflow type, the inflow slotted screen basket have pulp that flows from the outside to the inside. The rotor is located outside the pressure screen basket. heavier impurities are pushed in the opposite direction of the screen basket during rotation, Therefore, they are often used for fine screening and pre-screening.

Outflow Slotted Screen Basket

The outflow slotted screen basket is specifically designed for outflow pressure screen. With the flange on the outside, the rotor rotates inside the drum, generating centrifugal force and pressure differential, allowing qualified pulp to flow from the inside to the outside. This pressure screen basket accurately separates fibers and impurities from the pulp, offering high screening efficiency and strength, and is particularly suitable for long fiber screening.

Drilled Hole Screen Basket

The drilled hole screen basket has a surface covered with uniform and precise round holes, which is significantly different from the slotted screen basket. In the pulping process, it separates materials according to their diameter. The size of the screen holes directly affects the screening effect and can screen different materials.

Coating Screen Basket

The coating screen basket is widely used in the pulp and paper industry, covering a variety of applications from starch to kaolin, for storing and screening starch to obtain high-quality adhesives that can be sprayed onto wet paper spokes. They are available in two types: outflow and inflow coating screen basket.

Customer Cases

A paper mill in Thailand required a high-precision slotted screen basket for coarse screening. Our company customized a pressure screen basket with a high aperture ratio and optimized slot width. After installation, the screening effect was significantly improved, the pulp cleanliness was more stable, and the customer reported reduced energy consumption and extended maintenance cycles.

Sun Hong drilled screen basket is installed in the coarse screening section of the Russian pulp production line. The conical design of the hole improves the impurity removal rate and enhances the discharge capacity. Compared with the previous pressure scree basket, the frequency of clogging and downtime are reduced, the service life is extended, maintenance costs are reduced, and the overall screening effect is significantly improved.

We developed optimization solutions for the fine and coarse screening processes of our Russian client’s OCC production line, helping to solve problems such as unstable pressure screen basket screening and high waste rates. After installation and commissioning, the slurry line operated smoothly and efficiently, improving screening efficiency, reducing fiber loss, extending service life, and lowering costs.

Pressure Screen Basket FAQS

What Should We Pay Attention to? When Installing a Pressure Screen Basket?

Before installing the pressure screen basket, ensure the pressure screen is completely shut off, the main power is disconnected, and the locking and tagging procedures are completed. Confirm the pulp is emptied. Verify that the new pressure screen basket model and size are completely consistent with the requirements, and that there are no damages or dents. Avoid bumping the inside of the cavity when removing the old screen drum. When installing the new screen basket, apply special grease to the sealing ring to facilitate installation, prevent wear and twisting of the sealing ring, and extend its service life. Ensure that the positioning marks on the screen basket correspond to the markings on the cavity, and that the positioning pins or keyways are perfectly aligned.

Pressure Screen Basket Cleaning

Regular cleaning of the pressure screen basket is crucial for ensuring the efficiency of the pressure screen and the quality of the pulp. During the pulping process, fibers and colloids in the pulp gradually clog the screen slot and holes. Failure to clean in time will lead to reduced screening efficiency and increased energy consumption.

When cleaning the pressure screen basket, it is essential to determine its material, typically 304 or 316L stainless steel, and confirm the material of the seals. Ensure the cleaning solution is compatible with both materials, and strictly control the concentration of the cleaning solution. Soak the screen basket to soften any adhering substances. Use a brush or sponge dipped in cleaning agent to gently brush the surface and interior of the screen basket. Do not use hard objects such as wire brushes, as these may scratch the screen slot and affect accuracy. Afterward, rinse with a high-pressure water gun to ensure all impurities and residual cleaning agent are removed.

How to Effectively Extend the Service Life of the Pressure Screen Basket?

In addition to regularly cleaning the pressure screen basket, the following points should be noted:

(1) Before the pulp enters the pressure screen, it must be removed by sand and slag removal equipment to remove impurities such as sand and iron filings, preventing hard objects from entering and damaging the screen basket.

(2) If the equipment needs to be shut down for a long time, the pressure screen basket must be cleaned to prevent residual pulp from drying and clogging the screen slot, making it difficult to start up next time, and in severe cases, even damaging the equipment.

(3) Cleaning and during routine maintenance of the pressure screen basket, pay attention to whether the mechanical seal cooling water supply is normal. The pressure of the sealing water and flushing water should be higher than the incoming pulp pressure to prevent slurry from entering the seal and causing wear.

How to Determine if a Pressure Screen Basket Needs Replacement?

(1) The screen basket is a consumable part of the pressure screen. It is wear-resistant but cannot be used permanently. Observe the edges of the screen slot. If visible wear is observed, the edges become rounded, chamfered, or the screen opening width increases significantly, it usually indicates a decrease in the screening accuracy of the pressure screen basket. Excessively large screen slot can cause impurities to enter the good pulp.

(2) Observe whether there is wear at the slurry inlet end. The upper part of the screen drum is the part most severely impacted by the slurry. Generally speaking, the wear in this part is the most severe, and grooves and thinning may occur.

(3) In addition, if cracks or breaks are observed at the weld points, the strength of the pressure screen basket has decreased and it must be replaced immediately.

(4) If the impurities in the slurry suddenly increase without any changes in the process, it may be due to damage or severe wear of the pressure screen basket, which must be checked and replaced immediately.

Is Vibration During Pulping Caused By the Pressure Screen Basket? How Can it be Resolved?

Vibration during pressure screen operation is usually related to the screen basket and rotor.

(1) Pressure screen basket blockage: If the pressure screen basket is severely blocked locally, it will also obstruct the pulp flow, causing periodic pressure fluctuations, which will also lead to vibration.

(2) Rotor wear and installation angle: Observe whether the rotor is severely worn or whether the installation angle is off. If the wear is severe, it will not be able to generate effective pulse pressure, resulting in pressure screen basket blockage and unstable slurry flow.

(3) Rotor to screen basket clearance: Check if the clearance between the rotor and the inner wall of the screen basket is too small. A small clearance will produce impact noise and severe wear. An excessively large clearance will weaken the pulse, reduce the self-cleaning effect of the pressure screen basket, and cause the pulp to flow unevenly, resulting in vibration.

(4) Pressure screen basket deformation: In a few cases, the pressure screen basket may become out of round due to collisions during disassembly or installation. During operation, it may rub against the rotor, causing vibration. In this case, the machine must be stopped for correction or replacement.
