Refiner Plate in Paper Pulp Industry

In pulping production, refiner plates are the core component affecting fiber processing efficiency and quality. As the core component of pulping, refiner plates use the mechanical action of their own teeth to process the fibers in the pulp. During operation, the refiner plates impact and shear the effective load of flocculated fibers at the intersection of the tooth edges per unit length, thereby loosening, appropriately cutting and fracturing the fibers in the pulp, while allowing the fibers to absorb water and swell, thus possessing high elasticity and plasticity to meet the needs of subsequent papermaking production.

After steaming or mechanical grinding, screening, and bleaching, pulp cannot be directly used for paper making. Due to the lack of necessary flexibility in the fibers in pulp, the bonding force between fibers is not ideal. If it is used to make paper, the paper will be loose, porous, rough on the surface, and have low strength, which cannot meet the requirements for use. It is necessary to use pounding and grinding to produce natural hemicellulose adhesive on the fiber surface, in order to strengthen the fiber bonding force and physical strength.

Common Refiner Plate Classification

Common refiner plate type include conical refiner plate, double disc refiner plate, hot mill refiner plate, desander deflaker refiner plate, thermal dispersion refiner plate, etc.

The design of these refiner plates depends on their specific processes and functions within the pulping production line.

  • Conical refiner plates are commonly used in traditional long-fiber pulping. Their structure allows for gentle and sustained kneading, squeezing, and fibrillation of the fibers, significantly improving fiber strength.
  • Double disc refiner plates, as the most commonly used accessories in pulping, offer good efficiency and flexibility. The adjustable disc tooth gaps allow for precise control of fiber shearing and fibrillation ratios, making them widely applicable to various pulps.
  • Hot mill refiner plates are also commonly used in thermopolishing processes (e.g., woodworking), separating fibers at high temperatures and requiring high impact toughness and abrasion resistance.
  • Desander deflaker refiner plates‘ core function is to separate impurities from fibers and perform preliminary fiber decomposition. These discs further defrother the pre-treated pulp in the pulping process, resulting in more uniform fiber dispersion and improved pulp quality.
  • Thermal dispersion refiner plates are used for the thermal melting and dispersion of colloidal substances in waste paper pulp. They soften and disperse impurities through heating, facilitating subsequent processing.

Material of Refiner Plate

The design of the refiner plate must select the appropriate tooth profile to achieve the predetermined beating parameters, and must also have good wear resistance and impact toughness. Considering wear resistance and economy, multi-element alloy refiner plate and high chromium cast iron refiner plate dominate due to their excellent wear resistance. Multi element alloy refiner plate with coarse surface particles tend to have better fiber separation and broom effect; Special steel refiner plate tend to have a more intense cutting effect on fibers.
